Veneers

Thin, tooth-coloured covers bonded to the front of teeth to change their appearance.

What it is

A veneer is a thin layer of tooth-coloured material that is bonded to the front surface of a tooth. Veneers can be made from porcelain by a dental laboratory, or built up directly on the tooth using composite resin.

Veneers are used to change the shape, colour or size of teeth. Because a small amount of tooth surface is usually removed, the dentist will talk carefully with you before you decide.

Is it right for me?

Veneers may be an option for front teeth that are chipped, worn, stained in a way that whitening can't change, slightly uneven, or have small gaps between them.

Your teeth and gums need to be healthy first. The dentist will explain whether veneers, whitening, bonding or another option suits your teeth.

What happens at the appointment

  1. The dentist examines your teeth and talks about what you'd like to change.
  2. For porcelain veneers, a thin layer of enamel is removed and an impression or scan is taken. Temporary veneers may be placed.
  3. The laboratory makes the veneers to fit your teeth.
  4. At the next visit, the veneers are checked for fit and shade, then bonded to your teeth.
  5. For composite veneers, the material is shaped directly on your teeth, usually in one visit.

Recovery and aftercare

Your teeth may feel a little sensitive for a few days.

Avoid biting hard objects such as pens, ice or fingernails, and avoid opening packets with your teeth.

Brush and clean between your teeth as normal and come for regular check-ups. If you grind your teeth, ask about a night guard.

Common questions

Are veneers permanent?

Because some enamel is usually removed, a tooth with a porcelain veneer will always need a covering. Veneers may need replacing over time.

What's the difference between porcelain and composite veneers?

Porcelain veneers are made in a laboratory. Composite veneers are built up on the tooth at the practice. The dentist can explain the differences for your teeth.

Can veneers be whitened?

No. Whitening doesn't change the colour of veneers, so if you'd like whiter teeth, whitening is usually done before veneers are made.

Does it hurt?

Local anaesthetic is used when needed, so most people feel comfortable during treatment.

Does medical aid cover veneers?

Veneers done for appearance are usually not covered by medical aid. You'll receive a written quote before treatment.
