Crowns and bridges

A crown covers and protects a weak tooth. A bridge replaces one or more missing teeth.

What it is

A crown is a custom-made cap that fits over a tooth. It covers the whole visible part of the tooth to protect it and restore its shape. Crowns can be made from porcelain, ceramic, metal or a combination.

A bridge replaces one or more missing teeth. It is made of false teeth held in place by crowns fitted onto the natural teeth on either side of the gap. Crowns and bridges are fixed in place, so you don't take them out.

Is it right for me?

A crown may be suggested for a tooth with a large filling, a cracked or badly worn tooth, a back tooth after root canal treatment, or a tooth that is badly discoloured or misshapen.

A bridge may be an option if you have a gap from a missing tooth and the teeth on either side are healthy enough to support it. The dentist will look at your teeth and gums and explain the options, including dentures.

What happens at the appointment

  1. The dentist examines the teeth, may take X-rays, and explains the plan and cost.
  2. At the first visit, the tooth is numbed and gently shaped to make room for the crown.
  3. An impression or scan is taken so the dental laboratory can make your crown or bridge.
  4. A temporary crown or bridge is fitted to protect the teeth while you wait.
  5. At the second visit, the temporary is removed and the permanent crown or bridge is checked, adjusted and cemented in place.

Recovery and aftercare

Teeth may feel sensitive for a few days after each visit. With a temporary, avoid sticky and very hard foods.

Clean around your crown or bridge carefully. With a bridge, use floss threaders or small brushes to clean under the false tooth.

Come for regular check-ups so the dentist can check the fit and the health of the teeth underneath.

Common questions

How many visits does a crown take?

Usually two visits, about one to two weeks apart, while the laboratory makes your crown.

Will the crown look like my other teeth?

Tooth-coloured crowns are matched to the shade of your nearby teeth. The dentist will discuss material options with you.

Does getting a crown hurt?

The tooth is numbed while it is prepared. Some sensitivity afterwards is common and usually settles.

How long do crowns and bridges last?

It varies. How long they last depends on your bite, your oral hygiene and regular check-ups.

What's the difference between a bridge and a denture?

A bridge is fixed to your natural teeth and doesn't come out. A denture is removable. The dentist can explain which is suitable.

Does medical aid pay for crowns?

Some plans offer partial cover. You'll receive a written quote and we'll explain any co-payment before treatment.
