Dental Emergencies in Athlone & Ottery
If you have a dental problem, WhatsApp or call your nearest branch during opening hours and we'll help you decide what to do next.
What to do now
Toothache
- Rinse your mouth with warm water and gently floss to remove any trapped food.
- Take pain relief you normally use, following the packet instructions.
- Don't put aspirin or tablets directly on the gum. This can burn the skin.
- Contact your nearest branch during opening hours.
Broken or chipped tooth
- Rinse your mouth with warm water.
- Keep any broken pieces in a clean container with milk or water.
- Hold a cold compress on your cheek to help with swelling.
- Avoid chewing on that side and contact your nearest branch during opening hours.
Swelling
- Hold a cold compress on the outside of your cheek, 10 minutes on and 10 minutes off.
- Don't put heat on the swelling.
- Contact your nearest branch during opening hours.
- If swelling spreads quickly, affects your eye or makes it hard to swallow or breathe, go to your nearest hospital emergency unit.
Knocked-out adult tooth
- Hold the tooth by the top (the crown), not the root.
- If it is dirty, rinse it briefly in milk. Don't scrub it.
- If you can, gently place it back in the socket and bite on a clean cloth. Otherwise keep it in milk.
- Get help as soon as possible: contact your nearest branch if it is open, or go to your nearest hospital emergency unit.
