Teeth whitening

Lightening the natural colour of your teeth, supervised by a dentist.

What it is

Teeth whitening lightens the natural colour of your teeth using a whitening gel. In South Africa, whitening should be carried out or supervised by a dental professional so the right products and strengths are used safely.

Whitening can be done at the practice, or at home using custom trays made for your teeth and a gel supplied by the dentist. The dentist will explain which approach suits you.

Is it right for me?

Whitening may suit adults with healthy teeth and gums whose teeth have darkened with age or with stains from tea, coffee or smoking.

It isn't suitable for everyone. Whitening doesn't change the colour of fillings, crowns or veneers, and it is usually not advised during pregnancy. Some stains respond less well. A check-up first helps the dentist tell you what to expect.

What happens at the appointment

  1. The dentist checks your teeth and gums and treats any decay or gum problems first.
  2. The current shade of your teeth is recorded.
  3. For in-practice whitening, your gums are protected and the whitening gel is applied to your teeth.
  4. For home whitening, impressions are taken to make custom trays, and we show you how to use the gel.
  5. The dentist reviews the result with you at a follow-up visit.

Recovery and aftercare

Teeth can feel sensitive during and shortly after whitening. This usually settles. A toothpaste for sensitive teeth can help.

For the first 48 hours, try to avoid strongly coloured food and drinks such as coffee, tea, red wine and curry.

Results fade over time, especially with smoking or dark drinks. Ask the dentist about top-up options.

Common questions

Is whitening safe?

When carried out or supervised by a dental professional, with products suitable for your teeth, whitening is generally considered safe.

Will whitening work on my fillings or crowns?

No. Whitening only affects natural teeth. Fillings or crowns may need replacing afterwards to match.

Will my teeth be sensitive?

Some people have temporary sensitivity. Tell the dentist if you already have sensitive teeth.

How long does it last?

It varies from person to person and depends on things like diet and smoking.

Can I use shop-bought whitening kits?

It's best to speak to the dentist first. They can check your teeth and advise on safe options.

Does medical aid cover whitening?

Whitening is usually not covered by medical aid. You'll receive a written quote before treatment.

Costs and medical aid

We accept all medical aids and most RCS cards. Depending on your medical aid plan, some treatments may have a co-payment. We'll explain any costs before treatment starts.
