Consultations and check-ups

A regular look at your teeth and gums so small problems can be found early.

What it is

A check-up is a routine visit where the dentist looks closely at your teeth, gums, tongue and the inside of your mouth. The aim is to find problems such as decay, gum disease or worn fillings while they are still small and easier to treat.

A consultation is a visit to talk about a specific concern, like a sore tooth, a chipped tooth or a question about treatment options. The dentist examines the area, explains what they see and talks you through your choices.

Is it right for me?

Check-ups are for everyone, from young children to older adults. Many people come every six months, but the dentist will suggest a timeframe that suits your mouth and your medical history.

Book a consultation if something feels different: sensitivity, a toothache, bleeding gums, a loose filling, or a change you have noticed in your mouth. It is also a good first step if you have not seen a dentist in a while.

What happens at the appointment

  1. We ask about your general health, any medication you take and any concerns you have.
  2. The dentist examines your teeth and gums using a small mirror and a light, and checks existing fillings or crowns.
  3. If needed, X-rays are taken to see between the teeth and below the gum line.
  4. The dentist explains what they found in plain language and answers your questions.
  5. If treatment is needed, you receive a treatment plan and a written quote before anything is booked.

Recovery and aftercare

There is no recovery time after a check-up. You can eat, drink and go back to work or school straight away.

Keep brushing twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste, clean between your teeth daily, and cut down on sugary drinks and snacks between meals.

Common questions

How often should I have a check-up?

Many people come every six months. Some people need to come more or less often. The dentist will suggest what suits you.

Do you see children?

Yes. We see children and adults at both branches. Bringing children for regular visits helps them get used to the dentist.

Will I need X-rays?

Not always. The dentist will only suggest X-rays when they help show something that can't be seen during the examination.

How long does a check-up take?

Most check-ups take about 20 to 30 minutes. A first visit may take a little longer.

Does medical aid cover check-ups?

Many medical aid plans cover routine check-ups. Cover depends on your plan, so we'll let you know about any co-payment before your visit.

What should I bring?

Please bring your ID, your medical aid card if you have one, and a list of any medication you take.

Costs and medical aid

We accept all medical aids and most RCS cards. Depending on your medical aid plan, some treatments may have a co-payment. We'll explain any costs before treatment starts.
