Dental sedation

Options to help anxious patients feel more relaxed during treatment.

What it is

Many people feel nervous about visiting the dentist. We offer options to help anxious patients feel more relaxed during treatment — ask us which is right for you.

Sedation is different from local anaesthetic. Local anaesthetic numbs the area being treated. Sedation helps you feel calmer. The two are often used together.

Is it right for me?

Sedation may help if you feel very anxious about dental visits, have a strong gag reflex, find it hard to sit still for long periods, or need a longer or more involved procedure.

Not everyone is suitable for sedation. The dentist will ask about your health, medication and needs, and explain whether it is an option for you and what it involves.

What happens at the appointment

  1. At a consultation, tell us about your worries. The dentist asks about your medical history and medication.
  2. The dentist explains the options that may suit you and how to prepare, including anything about eating, drinking or transport.
  3. On the day, you are made comfortable and the chosen option is given before treatment starts.
  4. You are monitored throughout the appointment.
  5. After treatment, you rest until you are ready to leave, and receive aftercare instructions.

Recovery and aftercare

Follow the instructions the dentist gives you. Depending on the option used, you may need someone to take you home and stay with you, and you may be asked not to drive for the rest of the day.

Follow the aftercare advice for the dental treatment you had.

Contact us during opening hours if you have any questions after your visit.

Common questions

Will I be asleep?

Not necessarily. Ask us which option is right for you and what you can expect to feel.

Do I still need an injection?

Usually yes. Sedation helps you relax, while local anaesthetic numbs the area being treated.

Can children have sedation?

The dentist will assess each patient individually. Ask us about your child's needs.

Is sedation safe?

The dentist checks your medical history first and you are monitored during treatment. They will explain any risks that apply to you.

Can I drive home afterwards?

This depends on the option used. The dentist will tell you beforehand whether you need someone to take you home.

I'm very nervous. Can I just come and talk first?

Yes. You're welcome to book a consultation just to talk about your worries before any treatment.

Costs and medical aid

We accept all medical aids and most RCS cards. Depending on your medical aid plan, some treatments may have a co-payment. We'll explain any costs before treatment starts.
